Why are people buying CBD oil?
So what exactly is all the hype about. Users are making all sorts of claims from it such as curing cancer. Here's what CBD oil really does.
CBD oil is a supplement that promotes well-being. What is well-being? According to Google's definition, well-being means "the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy".
So how does it do that? We all have something called an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This is a network of cannabinoid receptors that are activated when we ingest cannabis. When they are activated we begin to experience different effects.
The effects we feel depends on the biochemistry, also known as the cannabinoid profile of cannabis.
CBD oil is very high in CBD which a non-psychoactive compound in cannabis. When you pick a good quality CBD oil product that has all the cannabinoids and terpenes, that's when you see the real benefits of it.
Why Lab-Testing CBD Oil Is So Important
So what is lab-testing and why is it so important?
When a company lab-test its products, they send it to a lab to test it for several things.
One being the cannabinoid profile and the other being contaminants. Once everything is tested, the company gets an official report that outlines these things.
The lab report should reflect the label on the product. So for example, if the CBD oil bottle is labeled 500mg of CBD oil, the lab report should say the same thing.
Lab reports are the only way to verify if the company is legit or not. These lab reports should be clearly stated on the companies website. If not then run away while you can.
This is an example of a lab report:
What type of CBD oil is Jacob Hooy?
Jacob Hooy CBD oil is labeled CBD+ because it contains other cannabinoids besides CBD.
There are three types of CBD oil - full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and CBD isolate.
Holland Barret doesn't say what type of CBD oil it is. But I'm assuming it's either full-spectrum or broad-spectrum as it contains different cannabinoids besides CBD.
Looking at the ingredients they only use two things. Hemp seed oil and hemp paste.
This is really good. Not many companies use few ingredients like that.
Hemp paste is an extraction of the cannabis flower that doesn't use any chemicals or heavy machinery. A big benefit of this extraction is that it contains all the natural terpenes. Most other companies use fake terpenes because terpenes are lost in most extraction methods.
Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp strain of cannabis. A carrier oil helps with the absorption process.
So when you mix hemp paste and hemp seed oil together you are left with a highly concentrated extract that can be absorbed into your body.
How strong is Jacob Hooy CBD oil?
Jacob Hooy CBD oil has two different strength levels that each come in two sizes. One is 2.75% and the other is 5%. Both potency levels come in a 10ml bottle or 30ml bottle.
Most people are used to seeing mg of CBD on the label but instead, Jacob Hooy uses percentages. This can be really confusing for some people so I've have broken it all down for you.
Down below you can see the percentages, bottle size, mg of CBD for the whole bottle, how many drops there are, and how many mg of CBD per drop.
- Concentration: 2.75% at 10ml | total mg: 275mg | total drops: 240 | total cbd per drop: 1mg
- Concentration: 2.75% at 30ml | total mg: 825mg | total drops: 720 | total cbd per drop: 1mg
- Concentration: 5% at 10ml | total mg: 500mg | total drops: 240 | total cbd per drop: 2mg
- Concentration: 5% at 10ml | total mg: 1500mg | total drops: 720 | total cbd per drop: 2mg
How it's used
On the Holland Barret website, it says that you should put a few drops under your tongue 2-3 times a day. The maximum drops recommended per day is 10 drops. Keep in mind that the dosage can be increased over time.
Depending on the type you get, each drop is worth different amounts. For example, if you get the 5% bottle at 10ml, each drop is worth 2mg. If you used the recommended serving of 10 drops a day you would hit 20mg of CBD for the day.
If you followed this every day, a 10ml bottle would last you 24 days, whereas the 30ml bottle would last you longer.
They also mention that you should hold it in your mouth for 1 minute before swallowing. They've explained the instructions quite well. That is exactly how you're supposed to CBD oil to get the most benefit.
However, let's move onto their lab report. The above is pointless if the product doesn't even contain that much CBD in the first place.
Jacob Hooy Lab Test
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, lab testing is extremely important. It's the only way to verify the potency of CBD and test for contaminants for safety.
On the official Holland and Barrett website, there is no mention of any lab reports. There are other websites that have gone out of their way to do their own test, but I don't trust any of them. Most of the time, they are being paid or sponsored to talk about their products.
Every company is supposed to have a lab report on their website.
Value of Jacob Hooy CBD+ oil
The value of CBD is determined by how much it cost per mg of CBD.
Think of it as getting petrol for your car. Lower cost per liter means it's cheaper so it's more valuable. CBD works the same way.
Here is how we grade the value of CBD oil.
- Best value: £0.06 or less
- Good deal: £0.07 - £0.11
- Fair deal: £0.12 - £0.16
- Expensive: £0.16+
Jacob Hooy CBD oil comes in two concentrations with two different sizes. So that's four bottles in total. Let's have a look at how much you would be paying per mg for each bottle:
- 2.75% at 10ml: £0.08
- 5% at 10ml: £0.06
- 2.75% at 30ml: £0.05
- 5% at 30ml: £0.04
So according to our expectations, Jacob Hooy CBD oil has done exceptionally well. Especially the more expensive bottles, you get better value for money.
It's just a shame that there isn't any lab-test to prove their CBD content.
How Does Jacob Hooy CBD Oil Taste?
Taste is subjective but I found Jacob Hooy pretty nasty. I had to chase it with some coffee to get rid of it.
It's just really bitter. It only lasts for like a minute or two but the experience isn't that great. I think it's partly due to the hemp paste.
As hemp paste extractions contain all the cannabinoids and terpenes, it gives it that raw cannabis taste. The best way to put it is, natural. We all know natural doesn't taste that great.
What are the effects?
For every CBD oil product that I try, I take the same dosages. I need about 20-40mg per day to calm down my anxiety and help me sleep at night.
When I've tried the best quality CBD oil products, I would almost instantly notice a difference once it's been absorbed into my mouth. However, with Jacob Hooy, I felt almost nothing.
I took double my usual dosage and still nothing. I was highly disappointed. I've looked everywhere online and people say similar things.
If anything, it's nothing more than a placebo effect.
Verdict: Is Holland and Barrett CBD oil any good?
Okay, that was my in-depth Jacob Hooy CBD oil review.
So is Holland and Barrett CBD oil any good? It ticked most of my boxes when looking at it before purchasing it. But the fact that they had no lab-test was a huge red flag for me.
When it came to the experience I literally felt nothing. Most people have reported the same thing.
I did see some people on YouTube have some positive experiences but then again I think it's mostly a placebo effect.
I personally think that if it was stronger and had a lab-test to prove the cannabinoid content, then it would be perfect. But unfortunately, it seems like another low CBD product that won't actually benefit people.
What Are The Other Options?
The brand that I recommend to all my readers is CBDPure. They have lab tests for all of their products. You can enter the batch number from the bottle onto their website and you'll see a lab report for that product.
If you go on their website you will see everything in dollars because it's sourced in America. However, they ship to the UK. They also have a 90-day money-back guarantee because their customers are never let down.
