Are you curious to discover the amazing benefits of CBD oil?
I'm extremely excited to share this with you today. I've been using pot as a treatment for years to help with anxiety, depression, and sleep issues. At first, I had no idea what I was doing.
I'm from the UK where cannabis is illegal but CBD oil isn't. When I was using black-market marijuana I always had adverse reactions because of the high Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. However when I tried CBD oil, for the first time I experienced firsthand the medicinal value of Cannabis without any intoxication.
Right now CBD oil has now taken over the marijuana market by storm. People have sworn by its amazing healing properties. The best part is that there are no psychoactive effects.
So how does CBD oil help? Well CBD oil is extremely low in THC but high in CBD. This means you get all the benefits of cannabis without any high.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD oil is simply an extraction of Cannabidiol (CBD-rich cannabis) that has been placed into a carrier oil, hence the name CBD oil. In cannabis, you have two different names to describe its cannabinoid profile. This is known as Marijuana and Hemp. The differences between the two lie in the cannabinoids present.
While both strains share similar cannabinoids, the clear difference is the THC level. THC is the only psychoactive cannabinoid. Hemp has less than 0.3% THC and the term Marijuana is used when the strain has anything more than that.
THC has its benefits but not everyone enjoys that mind alteration. Let's dive into the effects of cannabinoids before we jump into the main benefits of CBD oil.
The Effects Of Cannabinoids & Terpenes
The reason why cannabis is so beneficial for a range of problems within the human body is because of two things. Cannabinoids and terpenes.
Benefits of Cannabinoids
According to Wikipedia, there are at least 113 cannabinoids. The main two are THC and CBD.
Have a look at the image below to see all the amazing benefits of cannabinoids.
Benefits Of Terpenes
Terpenes are what give plants their smell and taste. There are so many different strains with different terpene profiles depending on the cannabis plant.
Have a look at this image below to see the most commonly found terpenes found in plant and their effects.
Benefits Of CBD Oil
1. Improves Epilepsy & Seizures
Let's dive into the first benefit of CBD.
According to Harvard Medical School, there is strong scientific evidence that it helps with epileptic syndromes.
Conditions such as Dravet Syndrome and Lennox Gastaut Syndrome don't respond well to traditional medications to control seizures. However, CBD has been proven in numerous studies to reduce seizures.
You may have seen videos of patients having dramatic changes after taking CBD. The FDA has approved the first cannabis medication for seizures and adult/childhood epilepsy, called Epidiolex. The active ingredient in it is CBD.
Here is another video of a seven-year-old boy who suffered from a condition that caused him to have seizures. CBD literally changed his life. There are many more stories coming out. Many proving that this in fact holds medicinal value in the world of those suffering from seizures.
If you'd like to know more about the medicinal properties of CBD, here is a video where a few doctors delve into the topic a bit deeper.
2. Improves Anxiety & Depression
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I suffered from anxiety and depression which also caused my sleep issues. When I used CBD myself it completely eradicated these issues. My stress just washed away and put me in a relaxed state but I was much more positive mentally. To add to that I sleep like a baby now.
Researchers think there is a reason why you experience less stress when taking CBD. They think that it changes the way your brain responds to serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for a huge part of how you feel and behave. Those who lack this often experience mental health problems.
Check this out. A study showed that a 600mg dose of CBD helped people who gave speeches and suffered from social anxiety. Other research shows that CBD oil may help with anxiety by:
There are also plenty of people who've shared their experiences with taking CBD for their anxiety.
3. Improves Sleep (Insomnia)
Sleep is often caused by stress which CBD is known to help with. Many mental health conditions also include problems with sleeping, for example, PTSD.
CBD aids with sleep by working with serotonin in the brain. This is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and behavior. The properties of CBD are very similar to traditional anti-depressants but it's more natural.
There's also scientific evidence that suggests that it has a calming effect on your central nervous system.
In an experiment, scientists collected data on 103 adults to see monthly documentation of their anxiety and sleep quality. During this experiment, they were evaluated after using CBD to deal with their symptoms.
The results showed an extraordinary outcome. There were 72 adults in the final sample all of which had anxiety and poor sleep. After taking CBD for a month, anxiety attacks decreased in 57 patients (79% improvement), and sleep improved in 48 patients (67%). This remained consistent throughout the rest of the experiment.
4. Reduces Pain & Anti-Inflammatory Properties (chronic, nerve)
The cannabis plant has been used as a treatment for pain for ages. It goes as far back as 2900BC. Scientists have recently found out that cannabinoids including CBD are what give its painkilling properties.
CBD has been shown to be a powerful cannabinoid that can help with both mild and chronic pain. This includes problems such as nerve pain, inflammation, and even arthritis. A lot of people are now turning to CBD as a natural alternative to a lot of chronic pain medications such as opioids.
Studies have shown that CBD reduces pain and has an anti-inflammatory effect by acting on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is a network of cannabinoid receptors located all throughout the human body. When you consume cannabis, the cannabinoids in it activate your endocannabinoids which relieves pain and controls pain response.
5. Cancer Treatment Side Effects
Even though the research is limited, there are now more studies that show that CBD oil may help with the after effect of cancer treatment.
Current cancer treatments involve chemotherapy which leads to adverse problems such as nausea and pain. Studies have shown that patients who are going through chemotherapy can greatly reduce these problems using CBD.
Researchers have also found that CBD may inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The keyword here is "inhibit", not cure. A lot of CBD companies make all sorts of cancer claims which cannot be backed up. CBD products are sold as supplements and not medicine which means they cannot make these claims.
6. Improves Skin Problems
Acne and Ezema are two inflammatory skin conditions that can greatly be improved using CBD. Inflammation is what causes these conditions to be more visible. Other types of conditions that CBD oil can help with are:
Acne is one of the most common skin inflammatory conditions. It affects around 9% of the population which leads to both mental and physical problems. Treating acne comes down to looking at hygiene and controlling oil production (sebum) caused by the skin.
A study posted by The Journal of Clinical Investigation looked at the impact of CBD on the skin. The results of this research showed two things.
The first thing is that CBD inhibits the production of sebum. When less sebum is produced the fewer chances of getting acne.
The second thing is that it has an anti-inflammatory effect on the glands that produce sebum. This is a huge factor that can prevent breakouts. Acne itself is a result of inflammation so CBD can help greatly with its anti-inflammatory properties.
CBD has neuroprotective properties which researchers have discovered. These properties include reducing damage to the nervous system and stimulating the growth of new neurons.
The things that cause damage to the nervous system are:
CBD can greatly benefit by repairing and protecting your brain. It can be useful for things like strokes and head injuries caused by physical contact. It also helps in treating and preventing neurological disorders such as:
Studies show that CBD improved the quality of life in people who suffer from Parkinson's disease and help with health issues such as sleep. It's also shown to reduce inflammation and prevent neurodegeneration caused by Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis.
8. Heart Health
High blood pressure can open doors to many health problems such as strokes and heart attacks. Researchers have discovered positive outcomes of using CBD for heart health and wellness.
Recent studies have shown that you can use it as a natural treatment to help lower high blood pressure. The American Society for Clinical Investigation did a study that showed that CBD reduced resting systolic blood pressure in people who were exposed to stress. Their research concluded that the anti-anxiety properties of CBD were the reason for the drop in blood pressure.
Another study involved 9 healthy men taking a 600mg dose of CBD. Given the small sample size, the research showed that it reduced resting blood pressure. This study also involved a stress test which would purposely increase their blood pressure. After this test, the researchers concluded that after taking CBD their blood pressure was smaller compared to not taking it.
9. Helps With Substance Abuse
According to Sage Journals CBD may help those with drug addiction or substance abuse. They've done 14 studies involving both humans and animals. The scientist in this research concluded that CBD showed a positive effect in treating people with addictions such as cocaine and opioids. However, the results for each substance varied a lot.
For example, those withdrawing from an opioid addiction showed barely any results with CBD without the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol. However, those with other addictions such as cocaine showed a positive effect with CBD alone.
High THC Cannabis Addiction
Some people deal with cannabis addiction. Tetrahydrocannabinol is the only cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that produces a mind-altering effect. It's great for people who suffer from pain and other conditions. However for normal people who don't require a medical need for high tetrahydrocannabinol strains usually develop unwanted problems.
A doctor from UCLA gave a 45-minute presentation on how people can develop cannabis use disorder and go through withdrawals when attempting to stop.
CBD may even help people even with cannabis addiction. Even though CBD oil derives from cannabis, the tetrahydrocannabinol content is extremely low and causes no psychoactive effect. So if you're someone who's trying to quit pot, using CBD can help you get over the first couple of days or months of withdrawal.
Other Potential Benefits (Bonus)
There are many more benefits of CBD, some of which are still uncovered due to the level of research. So I decided to add 3 more benefits that can benefit your health and wellness.
CBD For Pets
CBD oil derived from a hemp plant is being used more now to help pets deal with things like cancers and promote general well-being. The benefits of CBD oil products are pretty much the same for pets as it is for humans. All mammals have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The endocannabinoids in the body respond to cannabinoids from cannabis and promote well being due to the receptor activity. So this helps with pain response, stress, and all those other good benefits I've listed. So the results are more or less the same for humans and other animals.
It's extremely important to pick a reputable company that creates CBD oils specifically for dogs. You should also make sure it's third-party lab tested and make sure the potency of tetrahydrocannabinol is below 0.3%. THC can create a whole hoax of problems for your pets which you can avoid by picking a good product.
The Side Effects & Medication Interactions
According to clinical research, it's been shown that CBD oil can trigger adverse reactions. The level of severity varies from person to person. These symptoms can include:
CBD oil can also increase liver enzymes. Those with liver conditions should consult their doctor before trying it. If you're going to use it make sure you get supervised by a doctor who can regularly check your blood liver enzyme levels.
I've made an entire article about allergies and using CBD oil. If you're worried about any allergies or you currently have allergies, that post will help you with everything you need to know. Some minor problems from CBD oil are completely normal. However, things like a rash or noticeable adverse reactions could be to do with the product you bought.
CBD is a poorly regulated industry that opens up doors to entrepreneurs trying to make some quick money. In other words, it's not FDA approved so you need to do your research. The food and drug administration (FDA) in the united states doesn't regulate all the products on the market.
Good CBD companies will always have things like third-party lab testing, testimonials, and as few ingredients as possible.
You want to make sure you check with your doctor if you can take CBD because it interacts with certain medications. As CBD inhibits certain enzymes in the body it can increase the toxicity or decrease the effectiveness of the current medication that you're using. Here is a list of potential interactions that can happen if you use CBD:
There may be many more which is why it's important to speak with your doctor about using CBD oil.
How To Use CBD oil
CBD oil is taken sublingually. This means the oil goes under your tongue and you hold it for 30-60 seconds before swallowing. You simply use the dropper and put the number of drops according to dosage. If you don't know how much you need to take, I've written a whole article on this.
When you take CBD sublingually, it has a quick onset of action (about 5-20 minutes) and can last up to 4 hours. How this works is, the CBD inside the carrier oil gets absorbed by the glands in your mouth and into your bloodstream.
That's why it's important to hold it there for a bit before swallowing. Because if you swallow straight away then it gets processed by your liver when you digest it. This takes a lot longer to feel the difference this way and most of the CBD gets lost by digestion.
Where To Buy CBD Oil
We've got a whole list of all the top 10 CBD oil products on the market. This gets changed every single month depending on our ranking factors. It's essential that you pick a good product because this will determine your experience with it. Many people end up buying CBD oil from their closest health or supplement store which results in wasted time and money when they don't get the results they are looking for. In our list, we include the best of the best and why they are ranked like that.
CBD oil is a product that is legal almost globally because of the extremely low tetrahydrocannabinol content. The problem with cannabis laws lies in the tetrahydrocannabinol content because of its intoxicant ability. The research on CBD is still in its infancy stage and this article will be updated once we find more evidence of its benefits and clinical trials.
Even with all the benefits that CBD has to offer, it's super important to pick a good product and understand your dosage requirements. You can check out the best CBD oils here and learn how to calculate your dose here.
Long story short, yes it's legal to use in all states. CBD products are hemp-derived. Marijuana and hemp are terms used to describe the cannabinoid profile of cannabis. Anything less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol is described as hemp and anything more is described as marijuana. As CBD products are derived from hemp it's federally legal in all states. So any CBD oil product you buy is legal as long as a third party lab test can prove that it has less than 0.3% THC. The best thing to do is buy CBD oil products online as you can see lab test and get something that was grown in the United States.
CBD alone is not addictive nor intoxicating. It has no mind-altering effect that causes dependence or withdrawals when stopping. A full-spectrum CBD extract has traces of tetrahydrocannabinol. However, if you don't want any tetrahydrocannabinol for any reason, you can buy broad-spectrum CBD instead.
It's possible to have too much CBD which can create unwanted side effects. However, CBD itself doesn't create any intoxication. Those who suffer from chronic pain usually require much larger doses in general to cope. This is generally safe if doses are increase overtime.
This all comes down to:
Everyone has a unique ECS so two people with the same condition and weight may require a different dosage. I've created a detailed article on how to calculate your starting dosage according to your weight and the severity of your condition. If you read that you'll know exactly how to dose every day.
